New red roof tiles stacked on fresh battens and breathable membrane, ready to go on

New roofs

New roofs and re-roofing

When patching no longer makes sense, we strip the old roof back to the rafters and build it again properly, from the membrane up.

A roof that leaks in several places, sheds slates after every storm, or has rotten battens underneath is usually past repairing. Re-roofing replaces everything above the rafters: the old covering, the felt, the battens, and the ridge and verges.

Before anything is booked in, we’ll talk you through the choice of slate or tiles, how the new roof will be fixed and ventilated, and how long the job will take.

Signs it’s time for a new roof

Things you can usually spot from the ground, a window or the loft. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

  • Leaks in more than one place, or leaks that keep coming back
  • Slates or tiles slipping again soon after a repair
  • Sagging or dipping between the rafters
  • Lots of daylight in the loft on a bright day
  • Old felt that’s brittle and torn, or no felt at all
  • Grit from the tiles collecting in the gutters

Slate, clay or concrete

We’ll recommend what suits your house, and what the street around it is roofed in.

  1. New grey slates being laid over blue breathable membrane and battens

    Natural slate

Long-lasting, and right for many older and period houses.

  2. Orange clay pantiles along the edge of a brick house roof

  3. New red interlocking tiles on a brick house, with scaffolding

    Concrete tiles

Hard-wearing and good value, in a wide range of colours and shapes.

  4. Two roof windows set into an old red tiled roof

The easiest time to add one is while the roof is open.

Full roof replacement & flat roof installation above bay window and front door

Contacted Alfie during purchase of the property for them to do a roof inspection. Alfie visited and took pictures of substantial wear across alot of the roof tiles. Alfie provided the quotation for a full new roof and was happy to wait until we could give a definitive date once property purchase had completed and was patient when dates were moved back. Work started 13 April and was completed by 17 April. Lads kept the site tidy at all times. Absolutely over the moon with the result of the new roof.

Questions

Something else? See all our questions, or give Alfie a ring.

How much does a new roof cost?

It depends on the size and shape of the roof, the slates or tiles you choose, scaffolding and access, and whether any timbers need replacing. Our guide explains what affects the price, and we’ll give you a free estimate for yours.

Do I need planning permission to re-roof?

Not usually for a like-for-like re-roof. Listed buildings, homes in conservation areas and changes to the roof’s shape have stricter rules. Our guide explains when to check with the council.

How long does a re-roof take?

It depends on the size of the roof and the weather. We’ll give you a timescale when we price the job.

Can you fit roof windows at the same time?

Yes, and it’s the best time to do it, while the roof is open.
