New lead step flashing where red tiles meet a brick wall

Leadwork

Leadwork and flashings

Most leaks start where the roof meets something else: a wall, a chimney or a valley. That’s where lead does its job.

Lead seals the joints a roof can’t cover on its own: where tiles meet a wall, around a chimney, in valleys and at the sides of dormers. When lead splits, slips out of its joint, or the mortar holding it fails, water runs straight in behind it.

We repair and renew flashings, step flashings, soakers, aprons and valleys, with the lead dressed to the shape of the roof and fixed and sealed properly into the brickwork.

Signs your leadwork needs attention

Things you can usually spot from the ground, a window or the loft. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

  • Damp on the wall or ceiling next to a chimney
  • Lead that has lifted, split or pulled out of the brickwork
  • Mortar missing from the joint along the top of a flashing
  • Cracked cement fillets where tiles meet a wall
  • Leaks along a valley where two slopes meet

What we do

  1. Red plain tiles with a new lead flashing across the roof

    Step and cover flashings

Where a roof runs up against a wall, on houses, extensions and dormers.

  2. Chimney with new lead flashing on a concrete tiled roof

    Chimney leadwork

Aprons, soakers and back gutters around the base of the stack.

  3. Red tiles and a lead-lined valley gutter beside a brick wall

    Lead valleys

Where two roof slopes meet and carry the most water.

  4. Red ridge tiles meeting a brick wall, sealed with new lead flashing

    Cement fillets replaced

Cracked mortar fillets swapped for lead, which moves with the building.

How we renew a flashing

Simple from start to finish, with no deposit to pay.

Start with a free inspection
  1. Opened up

The old flashing and the tiles or slates beside it come out, so we can see the damage.

  2. Cut and dressed

New lead is cut and shaped to fit the roof and the wall.

  3. Fixed and sealed

Wedged into the mortar joints and sealed, then the roof is put back around it.

  4. You pay when it’s done

No deposit. You pay once the job is finished.

10/10 on Checkatrade

Full reroof completed in 2 days. Excellent team of men.

Alfie responded to my initial enquiry for a quote for roof repair for a leak very promptly. He took photos and videos of the cause and originally I asked him to quote to re batten and felt the front elevation reusing existing tiles. I then changed my own mind and decided that long term it was more cost effective to replace the whole roof.. The job took two days and completed yesterday approx 3 weeks after initial enquiry. The team of 4 arrived on time and were very committed, efficient, polite and informative throughout.

Questions

Something else? See all our questions, or give Alfie a ring.

Can a cement fillet be replaced with lead?

Yes. Cement fillets crack as the building moves. A lead flashing moves with it and lasts far longer.

Why does my chimney only leak in heavy rain?

Wind-driven rain gets behind failed flashings, or soaks through worn brickwork on the side facing the weather. We check both.

Is lead still the best material?

For most flashings and valleys, yes. There are lead-free alternatives for some jobs, and we can talk you through them.
