Away from the sea

Inland roofs miss the salt air the coast gets, but the open Wolds can be just as windy, and older roofs here suffer the same slipped slates, worn ridges and tired flashings.

Worth repairing

Many older houses and cottages around Driffield have slate or clay roofs that are worth repairing rather than replacing. If a repair will do, we’ll tell you.

Roofing in Driffield: your questions

Something else? See all our questions, or give Alfie a ring.

Is an old clay or slate roof worth repairing?

Often, yes. Good clay tiles and natural slate can outlast the nails and battens holding them, so a roof can sometimes be stripped and relaid with its own tiles or slates, topped up with matching ones. We’ll tell you whether a repair, a relay or a new roof makes most sense.

Do I need permission to re-roof in Driffield?

Not usually, if the new roof looks like the old one. The centre of Driffield is covered by two conservation areas, Driffield North and Driffield South, so if you want to change how a roof there looks, ask East Riding of Yorkshire Council first. A listed building needs listed building consent for most changes.
