Chimney repairs and repointing

Chimneys take the full force of the weather. We keep them sound, from the pots down to the flashings.

A chimney stack stands proud of the roof, so it takes the worst of the wind and rain. Over time the mortar joints wash out, the flaunching around the pots cracks, and water gets into the brickwork and down past the flashings.

We repoint stacks, renew flaunching, secure pots or cap the ones you no longer use, and renew the leadwork where the stack meets the roof, working safely from scaffolding or a cherry picker.

Signs your chimney needs attention

Things you can usually spot from the ground, a window or the loft. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

  • Mortar missing or crumbling between the bricks
  • Cracked flaunching around the base of the pots
  • Loose or leaning pots
  • Damp patches on a chimney breast inside
  • Lead flashings lifting at the base of the stack

What we do

  1. Repointed red brick wall, close-up

    Repointing

Worn mortar raked out and the joints filled again, so the stack sheds water.

  2. Chimney pots set in new flaunching on top of a stack

    Flaunching

The mortar cap around the pots renewed, sloped to throw rain off.

  3. Chimney stack with capped pots, the sea beyond

    Pots and caps

Loose pots reset, and unused flues capped to keep rain out while still letting them breathe.

  4. Red tiles around a rendered chimney, sealed with new lead

    Chimney leadwork

Aprons, soakers and back gutters where the stack meets the roof.

Questions

Something else? See all our questions, or give Alfie a ring.

Should I cap a chimney I don’t use?

Capping keeps the rain out, but a disused flue still needs a little ventilation to stay dry. We fit caps that keep the rain out and let it breathe.

Why is there damp on my chimney breast?

Usually rain getting in at the top or past the flashings, or soaking through worn brickwork. We check all three before deciding what to do.

Do you need scaffolding for chimney work?

Some form of safe access is always needed. Depending on the chimney, that’s scaffolding or a cherry picker; we’ll explain which when we price the job.
